Scientists Discover Thousands of New Species

Dec 10

An expedition to the island nation of Vanuatu has resulted in the potential description of 2000 new species, some of which are strikingly beautiful:

153 scientists from 20 countries participated in the survey of Espiritu Santo in the South Pacific, scouring caves, mountains, reefs, shallows, and forests collecting species. Out of over 10,000 species collected, the researchers are predicting that as many as 2000 may be previously unknown to the scientific community.

Dr Richard Harrington, vice-president of the UK’s Royal Entomological Society, bought an amber curio on eBay, thinking it was just an interesting curio. It turned out to contain a previously undescribed species of extinct aphid:

”I had thought it would be rather nice to call it Mindarus ebayi,” said Dr Harrington.

Instead, the entomologist who identified the find settled on Mindarus harringtoni.
